Triptych paintings are paintings which are comprised of three parts. Some triptychs are painted on canvas panels and some are painted on wood panels. For example box edge wood panels and box canvases are designed to hang on the wall together without any need for framing. They hang flush against the wall of your home or office and the fixings are hidden behind the backs. Some triptych paintings are designed specifically to hang with a gap between each panel, others right next to one another. Occasionally a triptych may hang equally well in a horizontal or vertical arrangement. Although viewed as trendy now the idea of triptychs is very traditional and they were often used in the form of hinged three part altar pieces during the Italian Renaissance.
