There are abstract oil paintings, abstract acrylic paintings, abstract watercolour paintings, colourful abstract paintings, pictures in neutral tones, some combining many colours some a few and others just one colour. A piece of abstract art is often composed of blocks of colours that are opposites on the colour wheel such as purple and yellow, green and red or blue and orange for impact whilst others create a harmonious effect by using colours next to one another such as green and blue, warm orange and red, cool yellow and green. Conversely there are artists who deliberately use colours which will clash.

As well as literally painting the paint on with a normal paintbrush abstract artists use all sorts of objects like knives, credit cards, sponges, cloths, scrunched up newspaper to dapple, stipple, drag, imprint, rub the paint on to the surface of the painting. Some artists throw paint at the surface to create splash paintings or splatter effects in certain areas, others dribble paint across or mix all the colours directly on the painting having dripped it randomly over the whole area. Other abstract artists work in a measured way planning out the painting in advance and where each section will go or what colours will be used in which area.

Textured abstract art involves either thick paint alone, e.g. palette knife paintings, or mixing substances into the paint to make it have thick rocky, bumpy, grainy, buttery qualities and so on, sometimes these are bought specially or they may be natural materials such as sand. It is also possible for the artist to build up a textured surface first on which to paint, for example applying layers of papier mache to the surface and then painting on top.

There are many patterns of flowing shapes like swirls, curves, ribbons, strands, threads and waves weaving across the picture. Geometric abstract art with angles and lines, shapes squares, rectangles, triangles, circles and hexagons.

There are square abstract paintings, rectangular landscape oriented abstract paintings and rectangular portrait oriented abstract paintings. Some abstract artists work on a large scale and produce big art which is suitable for feature presentation in a living room above a sofa, in a bedroom above a bed or in a dining room for example.

Abstract art is often painted on frameless box canvas or wood panel designed to hang directly on the wall in your home or office. Other abstract paintings may be unframed so that you can choose a frame you like when you receive your purchase.
