Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) was a Spanish artist who was born in Malaga, he trained in Barcelona but worked chiefly in Paris after 1900. Some of Picasso’s most popular paintings are those of the beggars, acrobats and harlequins of his Blue period between 1901 and 1908. ‘Les Demoiselles d’Avignon’ of 1907 was influenced by Cézanne and African sculpture and resulted in the development of Cubism with Braque. ‘Guernica’ is a horrific depiction of the destruction of the Basque capital during the Spanish Civil War. In 1985 the Pablo Picasso Museum opened in Paris housing the largest collection of his art.
