About My Art

For some years I worked in watercolours. I enjoyed that transparency and ethereal quality in the medium. It is important to mention that because although I now paint mostly in oils and acrylics, people have commented on the transparency and painterly qualities in my work which seem to be a throwback in style from my early work.
I was strongly influenced by the work of artist Graham Giles with whom I had the privilege of working in Tuscany during the summer of 2005.At this time I was painting the Tuscan landscapes ,mixing my own paint form the earth from the ground-true "local colour".
On my return to England ,completely converted to oils, I decided to apply what I had learnt to my own locality. Right on my doorstep was the expanse of sand and grasses of the Ribble estuary.L.S.Lowry painted here and I have grown to share his fascination with the quality of light and shifting sands.
Less than an hour away from my home lies the Lake district. I feel a closeness to the landscape here , maybe because, I was fortunate enough to have been born there. I am fascinated with the landforms and rocks.(A-Level geography has something to answer for here) .I enjoy going up to the Lakes every few weeks or so when I can notice and record some dramatic ,seasonal changes. I am particularly fascinated by the snowscapes in some rather out of the way places. Perhaps they'll find me frozen to a rock one day-such is Art.
