About My Art

I'll paint anything in any medium, happy in the knowledge that I can learn something new with each brush stroke, improve my skills and get great enjoyment out of the challenge. My one inspiration has always been horses - since my school days when I scribbled and sketched on books and anything else I could lay my hands on. I worked with horses for several years on leaving school and so have an excellent and knowledgeable source to draw from. Having to always work full time I didn't really get down to doing any art work until the 80s and then found that altho' I could produce a good quality drawing/painting of a horse I had no expertise to help me complete the background, foreground or any other part of the picture. So I concentrated on all the other important bits and pieces, temporarily excluding horses from my repertoire until I could do them full justice. I'm mostly self-taught, but have attended a few short courses, and gradually I've managed to improve my skills and abilities. I'm looking forward to having more time to paint and draw - and have just had a studio installed in the garden. Once I've moved all the art stuff in there I shall spend a lot of time there! I belong to a local Art Group that meets weekly and holds an annual exhibition. I also exhibit my work at Elham Valley Arts, near Folkestone, Kent. As I said in my introduction, some of my best work has been generated by commissions - being asked to produce something that I would probably never have thought myself capable of tackling had I not been asked - knowing that someone has the confidence in me to produce the goods. The most difficult hurdle for me to overcome is the one when I am able to say, confidently, "Yes, I'm an artist", instead of saying, lamely, "Well, yes, I do paint, but ... ".
My current obsession is pencil studies of horses. There are examples of this in my gallery, some of which sold as soon as they were exhibited in November! Since then I've managed to add a few more, so watch this space......
