Tom McGrath
Interview with the artist
What is the first artwork you ever sold?
Painting of a french garden.
What is your favourite media and why?
Acrylic is my favourite for a variety of reasons; it is durable, bright ,colourful and very long lasting. An obvious benefit of using acrylics is the quick drying which allows you to make progress with your artwork. The use of Acrylic paint also makes it easier to clean your brushes! as you just rinse them in water.
Did a particular person or event spark your interest in art?
Yes, my art teachers in school in Glasgow encouraged me greatly. I also won a prize in a national competition whilst at school. My prize winning entry was displayed in the Kelvingrove Art Galleries in Glasgow.
How long does it usually take you to complete an artwork?
1 to 4 weeks but it varies depending on the subject/commission.
Are there other artists in your family?
No, none of my family have shown an interest but they are talented in their own fields/occupations.
When and where did you first exhibit your work?
Glasgow art gallery 1960 I was a joint winner of a national schools art competition and my winning entry was on exhibition.
Have you ever inspired somebody to become an artist?
Yes, I have helped many people to realise their talent. Art is for everyone and I believe our creator gave all of us inbuilt artistic abilities. The reward of bringing that talent to the fore and the pleasure it gives people cannot be measured. I have taken various one on one and group drawing and painting classes and have had the pleasure of seeing children and adults producing fine artwork, even the sceptics in any group can be won over once they realise we are not there to criticise; but we are there to inform, encourage and inspire.
What is the best thing somebody could say about your art?
That it pleases them.
If money were no object which artwork would you buy?
The Mona Lisa.
If you could travel back which point in art history would you like to visit?
The impressionist period.
Which artist, past or present, would you like to study under or collaborate with
Monet.
