About My Art

I work mainly in acrylics using bold colour and strong line and in much of my work there is a graphic influence. I love colour and strong contrast and often like to create impact with my pieces. Acrylic is my preferred medium as I love its versatility.
Whilst studying Art I was influenced greatly by the Abstract Expressionists and their strong use of colour, but I particularly enjoyed all aspects of art & design in the Art Nouveau movement. I love the work of Alphonse Mucha and Gustav Klimt from this period. I also have a love of stained glass windows and admire the work of Tiffany.
Since opening my studio five years ago I have gathered quite a diverse collection of work, but much of my work has been dominated by my modern portraiture. I love the challenge in creating a contemporary portrait of a glamorous female face and often try out different styles to achieve this.
I also love abstract work and this is now beginning to outnumber the faces in my studio! It gives me the freedom to work more loosely and is a nice contrast to my often neat & tidy way of working! More recently I have been working on some semi-abstract paintings of lovers and am enjoying trying to capture the emotion on canvas. I am a big romantic at heart, enjoying old black & white movies and love stories and songs and these are often what inspire this work.
This year (2008) has been a tough one for me in that I have been recovering from a major operation earlier in the year which has meant a lot less painting than I would have wanted! However I am now fighting fit again and ready for lots of new work and eager to create the massive build of ideas that is bursting to get on to canvas!
