About My Art

My inspiration comes from subjects that have a special quality of colour, line and form - I often find these qualities in plants and flowers that intrigue and captivate me with their abundant variety and rich colours and forms. They often have a strange, curious beauty and can be delicate in appearance but equally contain great strength.
I attribute my appreciation of them to a childhood growing up in the countryside and my mother; who is also a professional flower-arranger, avid gardener and artist.
I work from life, occasionally using photographs if I know a plant will not last the duration of the painting.
I usually paint the flowers in a realistic manner, though I frequently take them out of their natural environment and depict them on a larger scale and allegorically.
I enjoy also working with charcoal and find that it can create a dynamic image that has a more immediate feel to it than the oil paintings. I like to use pastel to highlight areas of a charcoal drawing or to create bold swathes of colour for the backgrounds.
I also make and sell folding Screens in varying sizes, with painted canvas or linen panels, with bun feet and upholstered backs. These are enjoyable to make but are very challenging as they need a composition that will work as a screen and still succeed as a painting. I like the way that a painting can leave the wall space and become a free-standing work of art, in a room. They have a duality of function which is appealing. This idea has been incorporated in Oriental society by the use of screens, for centuries.
I make my own stretchers and primer and currently work on stretchers that have two inch depth. This gives the paintings an appearance of being complete even if left unframed. I like to use linen and sometimes leave the background bare, this has proved very successful in contrast to the painted flower.
I am also very interested how flora has been incorporated in history and culture - in art, design, architecture and society. I have studied an Oriental approach to perspective and try to apply some techniques to my own compositions. Flowers and plants have been depicted for centuries as a `language` to express sentiment and feelings - I'm very interested in this and use flowers and plants as my own ŽlanguageŽ.
I have been commissioned to draw and paint specific plants and flowers, often of a favourite plant. I try to paint them from life as much as possible with the aid of photographs.
I have also drawn animals and birds for commissions.
