| Peace Will Come+ A beautiful Native American girl closes her eyes and seeks guidance and healing from her spirit guide. For this painting I have used pastel on watercolour. After studying some work by American artist Lee Bogle I wanted to try something with mixed media in a similar style. I had in mind a dreamy, semi abstract piece where the subject merges with the background. I let the paint and texture dictate what the final image would look like. + |
| Imagine+ For this detailed portrait I am using Faber Castell Pitt pastel pencils on a pale sandy coloured Colorfix pastel paper. This is textured like very fine sandpaper which holds a good amount of pigment, ideal for building up layers. + |
| The Loneliest Place on Earth+ Having boxed as a teenager and again in the army, I know from personal experience what a lonely place it can be in the ring once the bell has gone. With this picture I want to portray the sense of lonliness a fighter may feel, even when surrounded by hundreds of people in the audience. Exhausted, hurt and in danger of defeat there is nowhere to hide. Only his courage, pride and determination will see him through. + |
| To a Mouse+ Inspired by my favourite Robbie Burns poem this painting will have a semi-abstract feel to the background painted in watercolour with plenty of texture created with salt and wax resist. Then the mouse will be added using pastels. Working this way, you never quite know how the finished painting will turn out so let's hope for a happy ending. + |
| Living in Two Worlds+ This portrait was a bit of an experiment for me. I have purchased a really nice set of Prismacolor pencils which have intense pigment and are lovely to use. I've tried pastel paper and watercolour paper but for this piece I wanted to achieve a greater level of detail. So I chose Bristol board as my surface which has a smooth, hard white surface but because of the lack of 'tooth', laying down the colours to the depth and intensity I required took quite a bit of work. But having practiced a bit and with the help of the 'colourless blender' pencil (basically a coloured pencil with no pigment in it)I managed to achieve what I wanted. + |
