Interview with the artist
Who is your own favourite artist?
David Hockney without doubt. An inspiration ever since I started to notice paintings in the 70's, Hockney continues to inspire to this day. He has such energy for putting stuff down on paper and is always looking afresh at the world via his drawing.
Where do you work, do you have a studio?
I am fortunate enough to have a wooden log cabin at the bottom of my garden where I can make a mess and get away from it all!
What is the best tip you can offer budding artists?
As Abraham Lincoln said, "If you think you can, or you think that you can't, you will always be right". I would add, don't give up and make the most of every opportunity to get your name out there, you never know where the smallest inroad will lead.
Do you have an unusual 'day job'?
I am fortunate enough to work in a creative industry in design & advertising as an art director. Whilst I am very lucky in being able to pursue a profession that follows my talent, to paint is the closest one gets to true creativity.
Are there other artists in your family?
My older brother David Gander is an artist, or rather an illustrator. He lives and works in the south of France under the pen name David LeJars, which is French for 'goose'!
What item could you not do without?
A sketch pad. Drawing has always been a passion of mine and though I often paint directly onto canvas, I still adore drawing and it never ceases to fascinate me.
When did you first start?
Oddly enough, I only started painting in 2005. Though I have spent 20 years in the graphic design & art business, I only just started painting when I went freelance earlier this year, but boy will I be making up for lost time from here onwards!
What was the last exhibition you visited?
The BP Portrait Award at The National Portrait Gallery, London - the best thing about working in the capital!
When and where did you first exhibit your work?
At the Hertfordshire Gallery, Hertford.
What is the best thing somebody could say about your art?
That it lifted their mood.
