About My Art

I work in a variety of media but mainly in acrylic as I find it very flexible. I paint mainly contemporary/semi-abstract landscapes. I find inspiration from the way light interacts with the land and changes its colour and texture.
I work mainly from photographs I have taken and try to capture the memory of what I felt at that time. I like to prepare the canvas by building a textured foundation using brush marks, gestures, strips of paper etc. and try to make the colour relationships seem spontaneous.
I leave a painting for several days and look at it from time to time to allow it to awaken a memory in me and then try to capture the experience in my paintings.
I love to experiment with techniques and colour and my method is constantly evolving and changing. I learn something new with each painting.
I also work in encaustic wax which is fun. I use a hot iron which has a special coating, to manipulate wax on a non-porous surface. The end result can be quite surreal at times. I prefer to create abstract paintings with the wax although it can be manipulated to create more realisitic works.
