Interview with the artist

Do you have a favourite amongst your own artwork?
Waterfront. Which is Acryic on canvas and is based on a rather experimental screenprint. I think it really captures the moment.

Which is your favourite art gallery and why?
I think great shows are more important than the actual gallery. I really enjoy seeing work in an open exhibition and like to submit works myself where possible. I think an open exhibition is quite inspirational and the work wide ranging and up to date. The biggest open is the summer exhibition at the RA and always worth a visit to see so much new work in one space.

Although saying all that I am fascinated by the Tate Modern. The building itself is magnificent inside and out and whenever I am in London I try to vist.

What do you like best about being an artist?
The freedom to do what ever you want. The subject, the media it all yours to choose. You can change as little or as much as you like, in effect there are no rules.

If you could pick just three colours to work with what would they be?
It depends which day it is. I often work with a limited palette. Today it is yellow, cyan and dark blue. However tomorrow it might be magenta, orange and black.

What is your favourite subject and why?
The Northern Landscape that surrounds me. I am fascinated by the light and colours of the forever changing landscape and try to capture this in my work.

Are there other artists in your family?
Not that I know of. Although they maybe just not ready to pick up a brush yet.

Who is your own favourite artist?
John Virtue, Martyn Brewster, Barbara Rae and Andy Warhol immediately spring to mind but I really like the work of many artists. Too many to mention; Some well known, some not so.

How long does it usually take you to complete an artwork?
How long is a piece a string. Usually one to two months but some pieces take years. Some works don't always come to fruition as they should but when revisited, sometimes years later, take on a whole new life.

Describe your routine on a day when you are working on your art?
No two days are the same. I might work all day, or all night. I might only work for 30 minutes. It depends on other commitments and how I feel at the time.

What was the last exhibition you visited?
The Leeds Open show at the Leeds City Art Gallery which had some good work. I also recently visited a great gallery in Keswick called the Northern Lights Gallery.
