Margaret Micklewright
Artist's Biography

I was born and brought up on the beautiful Isle of Arran in Scotland. Oblivious to any real influences in art, I loved painting my local landscapes and my other love, horses and ponies. I succeeded in getting a place to study art at Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen.
I graduated in 1984 with a BA (Hons) Fine Art (Drawing and Painting/Printmaking). I chose to study Japanese Art and Abstract Expressionism during my penultimate year with particular consideration of the role of gesture in art. I enjoyed several trips to New York whilst I was at college and this influenced my work there - giant canvases depicting the 'landscape' of New York - from an aerial perspective and from street level - the rhythm of shapes of buildings of cars, bumper to bumper on a street.
I have painted in between and during bread and butter jobs over the last 20 years, but at last, finally working part-time, I am now able paint for at least an hour a day! I enjoy travelling and have lived in several parts of the country but hopefully here to roost in lovely Somerset. I love walking, exploring ruins and have a long list of places I'd like to portray on paper or canvas. My interest in horses is deep rooted and I hope to paint a few more too.
