About My Art

With an idyllic upbringing on the Isle of Arran, my work nearly always features a reference to the sea, the sky and the bits in between. I have been around horses most of my life and am beginning to paint them too. Before starting a piece of work I like to choose the elements, such as the dark forboding of a stormy sky, the power of a horse or the pattern and colour of a harbour scene. I have a wide range of influences, John Piper, Japanese Art, Abstract Expressionism, the Scottish School, Turner, etc, etc.
I have worked in ink for years, enjoying the depth of colour and tone and its ambiguity - not really knowing what you'll end up with and hoping it will be just as you have left it before drying. The colour range and reliability of new acrylic inks makes them a real pleasure to work with, although I do like messing about with writing ink and various substances to create 'wilder' landscapes. I also work in oil pastels and I am currently experimenting with painting on silk.
I hope you enjoy my work
