One of a series of paintings on the theme of 'trees of the pagan calendar' painted for the Red Hen Artists Brighton Festival May 2006 exhibition on the theme of 'trees'.
The Ash Moon is the thisrd moon of the calendar, Valentines Day falls during this time. In European folklore snakes are said to be repelled by a circle drawn with an ash branch or a circle of ash leaves. Ash is the World Tree in Viking mythology.
