About My Art

As you may have gathered the works that I do are mainly watercolour landscapes and I usually photograph the scene rather than sketch them on site as it were. I don’t have the patience to sit on scene and I am a bit self-conscious about people looking over my shoulder, just in case it all turns out to be an untidy mess.
On the odd occasion that I have tried this, I have to admit that the results certainly have more immediacy and appear less laboured. The photographs which are probably not works of art themselves, are used to remind me what appealed to me in the first place and for reference as to colour, detail etc. I can then go home and with a coffee to hand and favourite music on, get started.
I usually set out my intentions on layout paper to get the composition and detail right, then transfer the result onto the paper. Washes usually first, then increasing detail later. I tend to be a bit rough on the paper, mainly because the initial stages have not enough impact and as a result, have usually chosen a hard rough paper like Arches (rough). As confidence grows, maybe I’ll try something else.
Subject matter tends towards traditional landscapes of Northern England, with the occasional boat thrown in, but I am tempted to try industrial subjects provided the image is dramatic enough, we will see!
