About My Art

My art is my passion. From a very early age I have always had a pen, pencil or paintbrush in my hand.
Using an airbrush professionally for many years as a graphic designer and illustrator led me to a love of subtle shading and continuous tone. I have worked in most media but now use oils on canvas to obtain the same effect.
Most of my work is of a figurative nature and sometimes echoes the past in style; Art Deco and Art Nouveau are for me, delightful ways to interpret what I want to put on canvas.
For up to ten hours each week I work from the live model, sketching realistically in oils or using black Conte crayon on edge to get a ‘twenties’ look. The human figure sums up just about every challenge that I am looking for in art being at the same time the most rewarding. I get completely absorbed by the painting process and though I enter each session questioning what I am about to produce, my painting 'talks to me' on a good day which allows me to relax and simply apply the paint. Because of the drying time needed for oil painting, I usually work on three or four paintings at once; sometimes a failure on one will help make another more successful.
Most of my painting is on box gallery canvas which I stretch myself allowing me to make them of a size and shape to fit the subject.
Each of my works is an original unique object and comes with a certificate of authenticity, if framing and/or mounting is required I supply guidelines aimed at producing a work that will look good for many years to come.
