About My Art

I paint in a number of different styles, responding to my environment as the mood and subject take me. I enjoy both watercolours and acrylics on canvas and I have lots of different ideas I want to explore. I love gardens and plants so this is a recurring theme for me. When I started painting again I initially worked in a fairly botanical manner, but I prefer to respond in a freeer way now, as in the painting of the lillies. I am also fascinated by light and its different effects as you can see in 'Bridge of Sighs' and 'Winter in Poole Harbour'. I was particularly moved by the strong shaft of sunlight on the water under the bridge in the former, which accentuates the dark, brooding and somewhat oppressive nature of the subject. In the latter painting the soft winter light reflecting on the sea was something that caught my eye every time I drove past that particular view. I am hoping to include more people in my pictures in the future; 'Turquoise Sunshades' is an example of this, showing people in every day situations. I especially liked the contrast of the colour of the sunshades against the warm orange and gold of the buildings, and the strong shadows cast by the bright sunlight.
