Carole King
I live in rural West Wales where I'm inspired by its wild flowers and breathtaking landscape. Recent pieces have featured local megaliths and unusual panoramic landscape views. My work forms a spectrum of pieces from detailed observations of wild and cultivated flowers to conceptual works and installations which reveal hidden messages when lit by ultraviolet light. Using saturated colours, I paint mainly in oils on canvas or board, varying in size from small 10 x 10cm pieces to around 1m square. My paintings are developed from a combination of drawings and macro photographs – I take my camera and sketchbook with me, whenever walking on the hills or along the coast path, to gather information. As well as flowers I am also intrigued by our many Welsh megaliths, which are typically found in very impressive and atmospheric locations. Other individual, finished pieces use printmaking media, including monotypes, Carborundum and silkscreen prints. I find the element of the unexpected in printmaking always stimulating and challenging. My prints are often developed for use as elements in my installations or become covers for special hand stitched, artist-made books.
