About My Art

My work is not an attempt to give a photographic representation of the subject, but to capture the initial first impression it gave me. Be it the line, colour or texture that first interested me, I will hold the image in my head, and paint it from memory when I return to my studio. With very few reference sketches or photographs, I find I have more freedom to use my memory and imagination. This helps me to create a more simplified image, which is a delicate balance between abstract and representational. I also often play with the perspective and space within the picture, which helps to achieve an uncluttered image of what remains in the mind’s eye after first seeing the subject.
My latest series of paintings are inspired by the bold textures and patterns found in modern crop farming, and the impact this has on our landscape. Although the use if texture is prominent, the paintings still have a delicate feel.
At the moment most of my work is in acrylics. I find them versatile and they allow me to work and rework more quickly, as I continue to develop my skills and style.
